My experiences many years ago were not that great.

Are the K series really better ? Tested for running at higher speeds ? Or is it same quality ? Water cooling not really something I want, unless it is really worth it. Avoiding/minimizing the LP1 throttling is my main concern. Non-K supposedly throttles down after 56 seconds.

  • I have a 1TB Crucial SSD for secondary storage I already have an AMD 5600XT GPU, and a CM750 PSU that are a few years old, but used only a little when I had it powering bitcoin miners for a year. Going to build a new high-end PC, for gaming, video editing and other heavy workloads. Submitted by Z3t4 to homelab Is this a good build ? I've seen minisas to external sas adapters, but it seems that they only change the connector format, no chips onboard to electrically isolate, there are also cables with external sas/mini sas ends. Other people use dual psu setups on gaming rigs or bitcoin miners without issue. I wonder if it is safe to do so, both devices will share the same ground, but they'll interconnect through minisas internal port, not external sas ports that are designed for that, my hba doesn't have external sas ports by the way.

I want to use all my disks, and since I'm already using a sas expander I though that I might keep the old pc case with the psu and all the disks, put a 5v arduino relay module connected to a usb port of the server, to short to ground the green pin of the psu when powered on, and connect the sas expander to the new server's hba card that I'll move from the old.

I recently got an hp dl380p g8 server and wanted to use it to upgrade my old rig. Submitted by Click-Beep to homelab external case with its own psu I’m not going to ask how crazy it is, I’m only going to ask if you think it would work.

And I know when you start stringing adapters on adapters on adapters things get odd real quick. I have to assume they did alright for all the Bitcoin miners using them.Īgain, I know I’m being a little crazy here. But even 70% usability would be a good start. I assume there will be overhead on the USB 3 riser option that wouldn’t be there less noticeable on a Thunderbolt 3 option because of the extra throughput. And then I’d have at least one 10Gbps Ethernet port, or maybe even attach a dual 10Gbps SFP+ NIC over a riser or Thunderbolt. USB 3.1 Gen 2 hits 10Gbps, and Thunderbolt 3 goes up to 40Gbps. What if, instead, I wanted to use one of these USB to PCI adapters? Or what if I wanted to use a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure with a Mini-SAS card inside it.

And some kind of mirrored M.2 craziness for game storage.īut what if I want to control each of these with a computer that has neither a Mini-SAS port, nor a PCI slot that I could install a Mini-SAS card in to. Maybe a four bay version for personal stuff and backups. I’m thinking something like this for Plex. I want to start building large amounts of storage for Plex, mirrored backup for personal media like family photos, and possibly networked gaming storage (over 10G wired network). I have one for my gaming PC and I love it. I’ve been looking at IStarUSA and their lovely cases. (Although, if they’re better suited to a PC building sub, I will move there.) But I’m still thinking about it, so I’m going to ask some questions. I’m thinking of building some large storage, in what is probably an incredibly convoluted and unnecessary way.
